Who is CAL Murray ?

A decade following the opening of the Louisville office, CAL was given funding to hire Peer Support Specialists that worked in remote parts of the state keeping individuals with disabilities informed and assisting where they were able.  After being approached with the funding to open a satellite office, CAL Murray opened in 1994 utilizing one of those support specialists as its first office manager.  For more than 25 years the Murray Office has served the needs of individuals in the Purchase region of far Western Kentucky. These counties include Hickman, Calloway, Graves, McCracken, Marshall, Ballard, Fulton, and Carlisle.  We provide core services and otherwise, answering the questions and fulfilling the needs of individuals with disabilities.

Accessible Murray logo

Accessible Murray is a public campaign that aims to make Murray a more disability friendly community.  Accessible Murray would be governed by a panel that would include representatives from the Center for Accessible Living, and other agencies, places of business, city and county officials, and places of worship.

Accessible Murray has the goals of:

1. Recognizing places of public accommodation that

a. Comply with the ADA.
b. Exceed the requirements of the ADA to make Murray a more disability friendly community.

2. Promoting education and awareness regarding the disability community in Murray.

Accessible Murray would have a two tiered recognition system for places of public accommodation that meet the two previously mentioned goals of ADA compliance and exceeding the requirements of the ADA.  Businesses would have the opportunity to request that their place of business be surveyed to check for ADA compliance. Those businesses that comply would then be rewarded with a sticker or sign saying something along the lines of “We welcome people with disabilities.

In order to be recognized as exceeding the basic requirements of the ADA in promoting accessibility, businesses may be nominated or self-nominate themselves for further review. The panel would meet, perhaps quarterly, to agree on whether or not this business should receive the higher level of distinction. Examples of excellence would include actively seeking out and hiring people with disabilities, serving on the panel of Accessible Murray, exceeding basic ADA requirements (such as installing a button for an automatic door or making bathroom doors easier to open, close, and lock from chair height), conducting their own events for outreach or educational purposes, or providing ADA training for their employees. The stickers that correlate with this tier would read something like “We are disability friendly partners with Accessible Murray.” This organization would also receive the first sticker.

Sisterhood of Unique Ladies Logo

This peer support group was first started by CAL Bowling Green.  The idea is that women with disabilities can get together and talk about different things, have some fun, and support each other.  CAL Murray has its own version.  Topics are chosen by the ladies that participate with the group.  SOUL is currently meeting virtually every 3rd Thursday at 6pm Central/7pm Eastern and any lady regardless of location is welcome to participate.

Please visit our Facebook group for more information.
